Even though there were differences in religious idealogies between the Missourians and the Mormons, it appears that the real conflict came between religion versus irreligion. For example, Joseph Smith received a revelation in 1831 concerning keeping the Sabbath day holy. He was told by the Lord that he and the Saints of God should keep themselves unspotted from the world, pay their devotions to the Most High, confess their sins to their brethren, prepare food with singleness of heart, and preserve Sunday as a day totally for worship (D&C 59:9-16). This came in stark contrast to many of the Missourians way of worshipping on Sunday:
In the years before 1820, in St. Louis, Sunday was a day for the conducting of business and amusement rather than one of worship, and these days carried records of fighting and riot of negro slaves. St. Charles had horse races on Sunday. In 1819, white men in the frontier town of Franklin paraded the streets on Sunday, played cards, and fought. Everywhere on the frontier the Sabbath was much neglected and profaned, even by professors of religion. 24
